The Boston Celtics finalized to extend the contract of Doc Rivers as coach for three more years. The reason of doing so is that Doc had led the team to an NBA title despite the fact that the previous season was the second worst in the annals of the team.celtics coach doc rivers

Doc’s contract

The Boston Celtics never makes the contract details public. However a person who knew about Doc’s deal released some information on condition of anonymity. Doc’s contract had one year pending in it which was extended to the 2010-2011 season at a yearly amount of approximately 5.5 million USD.

Doc’s coaching

During the fourth season as coach Doc guided the team to an NBA record 17th championship and the first of the team in the last 22 years. The team was coached to a 66-16 record which was the third best in the history of the club and the best in the NBA. In the first season of Doc as a coach the team was 45-37 from where they slipped to 24-58 during the third season of Doc. During the previous one year the team managed a 42 win turnaround which is a league record. An owner and managing partner of the team, Steve Pagliuca briefed The Associated Press that Doc was capable of handling the pressures that arise due to the failures. He did not yield even if the condition of the team altered from bad to worse. The state of the team improved after it had drafted Kevin Garnett the forward from Minnesota and Ray Allen the guard from Seattle.
