NBA stars LeBron James and Stephen Curry of the Cavaliers and Warriors have stated that the NBA Finals champs will not be going to the White House and visit US President Donald Trump. It does not matter which team will win, neither is willing to make the House call.
Both stars spoke just a day after President Trump revoked the White House invitation to the NFL Champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. This came after reports came out that fewer than 10 players were willing to take part in the traditional trip as a celebration of the major US sports achievement.
When asked about this, James said, “It’s typical of him… I’m not surprised… I know no matter who wins this series, no one wants the invite anyway. It won’t be Cleveland or Golden State going.”
Curry also agreed with LeBron, and Kevin Durant also concurred, saying “I’m sure whoever wins this series won’t be going.”
Last year, Trump also revoked the White House invitation to the Golden State Warriors after hearing that Curry objected to Trump’s administration comments as well as policies.
According to Curry, “You’ve got to do what’s in the best interest of your team… It’s unfortunate but we all have to do what we have to do and the Eagles fall right into that.
“Every team has a right to speak for themselves in that situation and I think that’s big.”
Steve Kerr, Warriors coach, added that he was not shocked at the recent news of Trump’s sporting snub. He said that the teams are looking forward to returning to the long standing tradition of White House visits as soon as Trump is no longer there.
Kerr said, “It’s not surprising. The President has made it pretty clear he’s going to try and divide us all in the country for political gain. We’re all looking forward to the day when we can go about celebrating Americans for their athletic achievements.
“It will be nice when we can get back to normal, in three years.”
James said that people should remember the remarkable season the Eagles had, and not be caught up with the situation with Trump. He stated that just because Trump dis-invited them from the White House, does not mean that the Eagles’ victory should be taken away. Their victory is way bigger than getting an invitation to the White House, especially if Trump is there.
