Sunday, August 24, 2008– On August 23, the American women defeated the Australian national team to win Olympic gold, by a score of 92-65. >
It was a much-anticipated rematch between the two teams, as they are both the elite in the National team fields, and the US had defeated the Aussies - just barely - in a warm up to the Olympics.
Unfortunately, the game was not the nail-biter that was hoped for. The Americans took command at about the five minute mark in the first quarter and never let up.
This was the fourth time in a row that the Australian team have lost to the American women in the Olympics (a point underlined by Lisa Leslie, who had been on all four teams and put those three other medals around her neck in a dig at the Aussies after the initial gold medal ceremony was over.)
