A Clutch, or most commonly known as clutch hitting, is a term in Baseball to describe an ability to outperform his teammates by having too much knowledge, reflexes, and batting strokes towards the game. It is also believed that clutch is being recorded as one of the bases for scoring position and late performances during close games. Clutch hitting is also a special ability, which the player can significantly make a slight impact during the game by making home runs with 2 strikeouts. On the contrary, baseball writers often see this ability as a myth.
How is Clutch Hitting a Myth?
Some baseball analysts, such as Bill James and Dick Cramer, have posed clutch hitting as a myth because there's no evidence in which a group of players can outperform their other team members. In a 1984 Baseball Abstract issue, Bill James noted that the problem with clutch hitting is that no one can see the process and the effects of this technique in a game. Eventually, clutch hitting does not affect the game in general.
The Statistics of Doing Clutch Hitting
Only some players are using clutch hitting as a technique since this can only affect a little in the game. According to Dick Cramer's study, clutch hitting numbers in-between seasons can be played by the same set of players. Since Cramer has studied this, many people believe that it's an acquired skill, because that's what Cramer's initial findings are all about. Even though clutch hitting can only be seen on limited occasions, still players can rise to the occasion using clutch hitting, only if they are under pressure. For example, Alex Rodriguez has strongly agreed that this is such a technical skill needed to be practiced because it can be a struggle upon execution.
Examples of Clutch Hitting
Yankees Shortstop player named Derek Jeter has given an example in the reality of clutch hitting. Since he was considered as a wide clutch player, his record comes off with .317/.388/.462, whereas his playoff number is at its worst through the 2007 baseball postseason. During the 2001 World Series, he used clutch hitting for his offensive play, which took the team on the losing side, because of a poor statistical level.
