Bang is a word often used in Baseball to describe a very close call out from the umpire. At the same time, it also means postponing a scheduled game because of unforeseen events. Other terms for Bang is a bang-bang or double play, which involves forcing a player out when the fielder had already caught the ball, before the batter’s foot landed on the base. These plays are usually close and thrilling that many times an umpire missed to call players out. However, in most cases, the bang is seen during instant replays, where on-field sports analysts are assessing the play. Since this is a close and quick encounter, the replay had never affected the game’s outcome, especially when the umpire had already made a decision.
Postponement of Events
The other meaning of Bang is the postponement of events, where the curfew is being set on a certain city, an artificial light failure that might affect the gameplay, announced blackout, and inclement weather. These are mostly uncontrolled beyond the league’s organization, so they have to create an alternate solution just in case baseball events might get postponed. In the 2008 World Series, inclement weather can result from an in-game suspension and be resumed at a later time, when the weather forecast is going okay.
Caught on Tape
Since this is a quick encounter, most of the time, it’s only the center field camera that can catch every act on tape. The camera is placed within the corners of the field and its goal is to spy on the opposing catchers to call pitches. If the camera caught the action, the video room staff can decode the action and replay the video in slow motion. Although the commentary can’t change the umpire’s decision, still it is the audience who can keep track of it.
What Leads to a Double Bang?
A Bang can lead to a double bang if only the runner’s foot had reached the base before the fielder reaches out for the ball. If the situation is not forced out, then the fielder can tag out the runner before the runner can advance to the base. There are certain instances where it seemed difficult to consider if the runner is safe from being tagged out during the double bang play.
