The battery is a term used in Baseball which is used to describe a group of catchers. They are also called battery men or batterymates, which was originated by Henry Chadwick in the 18th century. Chadwick used these terms to describe the catcher’s staff as being the team’s firepower of the team. It was also inspired by the artillery batteries that were used in the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865. Later, this term became the official name of the effectiveness of both pitchers and catchers.
Well-Known Batteries in Baseball
Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford are two of the most popular and effective World-Series players who became batterymates for the Yankees in the mid-19th century. Because of their effectiveness as partners, they have collaborated for more than 200 games together. In 1899, pitchers can favorably pick their catchers, such as Christy Matthewson and Frank Bowerman in the 1900s for the New York Giants and Jack Coombs and Jack Lapp for the Philadelphia Athletics. However, the most eye-catching battery mate is the collaboration of the father-son in baseball history in 1941. Their names are Frank Duncan Jr. and Frank Duncan III.
Advantages of Batterymates
Being the team’s pitcher and catcher are creating significant roles in the team. The pitcher is responsible for throwing the ball from the pitcher’s mound, while the catcher is more on catching the ball thrown by the pitchers. When both of them are working great, then they can be great powerhouse players for the team. A lot of pitchers and catchers are coordinating with each other for the sake of their team's victories and it can only work best if they are cooperating since the training.
Memorable Batteries
Perhaps anyone can remember Chris Sox and Alex Avila’s partnership for the White Sox. Avila, who at that time is battling with his concussion, was brought to partner with Sale who has the record of 84.3% WAR. Also, Jacob deGrom and D’Arnaud of the Meds became great batteries with a National League Rookie of the Year Award under de’Grom’s belt. They have finished off a 3.17 EA and 4.4 WAR.
