The batter’s eye, or most commonly called the batter’s eye screen, is a dark area where the beyond the center-field wall are located. The batter’s eye looks like a backdrop within the sight of the batter while facing away from the pitcher. The batter’s eye screen helps the player to see the ball better against any bright and contrasting background. The purpose of having the batter’s eye was widely used in the late 19th century, where it plays the same role as the cricket venue. If the baseball field isn’t present, then a black screen should be an alternative.
The Designs of the Batter’s Eye
One great example of a batter’s eye is painted in dark green or blue, where it can only allow the batter to see the pitched ball. A black bleacher is also provided to ensure good eyesight for the pitcher’s advantage. Without the batter’s eye screen, it would be difficult for the batter to track where the ball had fled. One additional help for the players if the audiences are also not wearing white, so they may not get confused. A black area is also provided in the center-field bleachers in the Yankee stadium to avoid player distraction however it was changed during 1970 to a batter’s eye screen instead.
Examples of Batter’s Eye Screen
Some baseball fields have rotating baseballs that display different advertising and sponsors, yet it can be rotated to a darker screen when the players begin to play. This method was also adopted by Shea Stadium, Oracle Park, and Petco Park. As for the minor leagues, the screen, since their stadiums or ballparks are naturally smaller than the big leagues, then there’s a small portion on the field where the batter’s eye screen is positioned. In Bradner Stadium, their screen is facing directly into the sunset, that’s why it’s a hassle to hold the game during sun breaks.
The Advantages of a Batter’s Eye Screen
Many things can be done with a wide fence windscreen, especially it benefits the batter’s focus on the incoming ball. When the ball is getting closer to the plate, it’s great if the player can see the white ball coming his way, especially if it’s a curveball or a fastball. The purpose of a batter’s eye screen is for the batter to see the ball out of the pitcher’s gloves even in bright lights. Through it, the batter can hit the ball effectively.
