Bat

Bat

Bat is the equipment used in Baseball which is specially made of either wood or aluminum metal. This equipment is always used by the pitcher. In baseball, they have a standard regulation of the baseball sizes, that it may not be more than 2.75 inches in thickness, and 42 inches in length. The baseball bat is divided by the barrel, top, and handle. The barrel is the thickest part of the bat, which is responsible for hitting the ball while the top is called the end of the barrel. Meanwhile, the handle is the part where the players are gripping the bat. Another term used for Barrel is “Lumber”.

History and Innovation

Over time and as technology emerged, the bat’s form became more refined. In the 19th century, the baseball bat has a wider range of sizes and shapes, which is why people are calling the batters “Whittle”. Earlier bats are also heavier compared to today’s bats because they are purely made of woods. As of today’s innovation and since the effects of many experimentations, they have come up with the idea that bats should be shaped like an ax handle. Other innovations throughout the years are banana bats and mushroom bats. The first player to use the approved bat materials, design, and sie was Joe Carter from the Toronto Blue Jays.

Materials Made

To make the bounce work, the materials where the bats are off should be either wood or metal alloy. Most bats manufacturers are considering aluminum alloy as the standard material, while some have consideration into making wood-made bats. Most wooden bats are made from ash, maple, hickory, and bamboo woods. The bat’s performance, such as its bounce, weight, and speed depends on the materials. The usage of wooden materials made a controversy about being an environmental threat when an exotic beetle-killed more than 50 million ash trees. As a result, they made these woods as baseball bats.

Baseball League’s Regulation for Bats

The Major Leagues stated that the bat should be smooth of not more than 2.61 inches in diameter. The length should also be about 42 inches, made of one solid wood. Bats made from aluminum alloy can hit the ball faster and more powerfully than wooden bats, even when the player has hit the ball with the same force.
