Balk

Balk is a technical term used in Baseball to describe an illegal play committed by the pitcher where he prevents the baserunners from running from one base to another. When a balk is being called off, then the umpire can consider that the ball is dead and all runners can advance to the next base. However, there has to be reconsideration for this, especially when the game proceeds without any relation to the balk, still players can move at least one base.

When Is the Balk Being Called Off?

A balk will be considered a "call off or call out" when the pitcher positioned himself on the rubber that makes any natural motion in relation to his pitching delivery, although it technically doesn't make a successful delivery. When the pitcher has sprung his available leg behind the pitching rubber, while the other leg has to deliver or attempt the ball to the second base. In the process of pitch delivery, the pitchers have to allow to make the second step toward the home plate with either foot.

Intentionally Delaying the Game

Balks can be a delaying tactic for some to delay the game, because it includes throwing to an unavailable base, to deliver a failing attempt to call out the baserunner. Balk, as a delay, would make a natural-like motion connected with his pitch delivery while not being able to touch the runner. However, if the pitcher committed this illegally without any present runners stationed on the base, he will be called off for an illegal pitch. For this instance, the pitch should be ruled out for a ball pass, until the pitch results in the batter to advance at the first base.

History of the Rule

This rule has been formally considered as part of the Rule Book since the Major League Baseball 2013 season. During these times, the pitchers are allowed to make fake throws to the base, which can easily deceive the opposing team. This technique was once effective not only to delay the game but also to deceive the opposing team from advancing.
