Assist is a term in baseball used to describe a defensive statistic of the defensive team who touched the ball by the team's batter. To execute the "Assist", if the ball strikes another defensive fielder, the fielder must be credited with an assist. This can also be credited if another defensive fielder has helped another player without an error. In general, assist is used as a statistic record for outfielders, too. Especially when the outfielder's job is mostly to make an excellent so the baserunner from the other team will be prevented to score.
What is the Baserunner Skills?
Sabermetricians, or the so-called baseball analysts for game statistics, have referred outfielders for their baserunner skills, which became beneficial in adding a record for assist. At the same time, if the outfielder made an accurate throw and if the baserunner doesn't attempt to advance his ability, then the "assist" will be pointed to the outfielder. To achieve the additional assist record, the baserunner should have better accuracy, as they are not usually credited for additional records if the opposing outfielder has an excellent arm for throwing the ball.
All-Time Assist Record-Holders
Throughout the years in football history, many players have been recognized for being the assist record holders. In the 17th century for the first-base position, Jeff Bagwell and Todd Helton dominated the records, while moving forward to the 18th century, Eddie Murray did an excellent job with the records. On the other hand, in the 19th century, many players have been advancing their skills, such as Mark Grace and Bill Buckner, which ultimately led to a remarkable career.
Importance of an Assist
Assist is proof that players are coordinating with each other to make a good play. This is only awarded when the outfielder touches the ball or when they throw the ball to another defensive player. If the execution came out successfully and even if they have touched the ball unintentionally, then the "Assist" would be recorded, too. It also shows how the team works to prevent the opposing team from scoring a run and become a powerhouse, defensive player.
