90 Feet

Yankee Stadium

The term "90 Feet" is used in Baseball which describes the distance from the first base to the second base, second base to the third base, and third base to the home plate. This only means that these four bases are identical, where the players can run from one base to another. The shortest distance from one base to another is called the baseline. In running around the baseline, the players are not required to run in a straight line, but they can run around so they would avoid being tagged by the opposing team.

The Outfield Walls

The outfield walls refer to the outer boundary of the baseball outfield, where the batter can hit the ball over the wall. This is considered a home run. Although there were no specific rules about the outfield wall's role from the home plate, still the Major Baseball League committee believed that the wall should be at least 250 feet from the home plate while the recommended minimum distance from the poles should be at least 320 feet. At the same time, batters find it easier to hit the home run when the ball travels at a shorter distance.

The Official Baseball Rule Book

The infield should have 90 feet distance from one base to another, and it should be graded, so both infield and baselines should be leveled. To look at the pitcher's plate, it should be 10 inches above the home plate, which is a lowered version of the early 1900s home plate level. For example, in Yankee Stadium, the measurement of the left is about 318 feet, the center field is 408 feet, while the right field is about 314 feet. Comparing the Yankee Stadium to the other stadiums or ballparks, the outfield dimension of the Yankee Stadium is close to the appropriate size.

The Effect of the Distance

The distance between bases has been proven effective in creating suspense during the game. Before it became a trial and error experiment for the players and officials, where they first tried 100 feet, but this would be too advantageous for the defensive player, while 80 feet is in favor of the offensive players.
