The Component ERA is a baseball statistic invented by George William “Bill” James, an American baseball writer and statistician. This statistic tries to forecast a pitcher’s earned run average (ERA) from the number of hits and walks, instead of using the standardized formula of earned runs for each round of nine innings. The Component ERA enables individuals to measure a pitcher’s performance in a different, fresher way.
