The New York Mets are a professional baseball team that has made a significant mark on the sport since their inception in 1962. Based in Flushing, in the borough of Queens, they compete in Major League Baseball's National League East Division. As one of two MLB teams in New York City, alongside the storied New York Yankees, the Mets boast a passionate fan base and a rich history.

History

Emerging as one of baseball's first expansion teams, the Mets were established to fill the void left by the departure of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants. The team's colors, a blend of blue and orange, pay homage to these former franchises and also reflect the outer bands of the New York City flag. The Mets faced a rocky start, finishing their inaugural season in 1962 with a dismal record of 40–120, marking the worst performance in MLB history for a 162-game season.

However, the tide turned dramatically for the franchise in 1969, when the aptly dubbed "Miracle Mets" stunned the baseball world by defeating the Baltimore Orioles in the World Series—a triumph regarded as one of the sport's greatest upsets. This victory set the stage for future successes, as they made it back to the World Series in four additional occasions, clinching their second championship title in 1986 against the Boston Red Sox. Other notable appearances include a Subway Series against their cross-town rivals in 2000 and a hard-fought battle with the Kansas City Royals in 2015.

Stadium

The Mets currently call Citi Field their home, a venue that opened in 2009 and replaced the iconic Shea Stadium, which served as their home from 1964 to 2008. With a seating capacity of over 41,000, Citi Field offers fans a vibrant atmosphere complemented by modern amenities. Its design pays tribute to the history of baseball while providing a spectacular view of the field.

Honours

Throughout their history, the Mets have celebrated several achievements, including multiple division titles and a pair of World Series championships. Their journey back to the playoffs in 2006 was marked by a thrilling run that ended just one game shy of another World Series appearance against the eventual champion St. Louis Cardinals. While the franchise faced setbacks in subsequent years, the Mets continued to grow, making another playoff appearance in 2015 and capturing their first National League pennant in 15 years.
