The Seattle Mariners are a professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington, known for their distinctive connection to the city's maritime heritage. Established in 1977, the Mariners compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member of the American League's West Division. Their home games are held at the modern T-Mobile Park, which has been the team's home since July 1999.
History
The Mariners' name reflects the strong marine culture that characterizes Seattle, and they are affectionately referred to as the M's. Initially, the team sported royal blue and gold, but in 1993, they transitioned to their enduring colors of navy blue and northwest green (teal), with silver accents. The team's beloved mascot, the Mariner Moose, adds a playful spirit to the franchise.Despite a rocky start, the Mariners began to find their footing in 1991, marking the first time they had a winning record. The team's real breakthrough came during the late '90s when legends such as Edgar Martínez, Ken Griffey Jr., and Randy Johnson led the charge. A memorable moment arose in 1995 when Martínez hit a walk-off double in Game 5 of the ALDS, propelling the Mariners to their first playoff series victory and preserving baseball in Seattle. This iconic play not only secured their first division championship but also created a lasting legacy in the hearts of Mariners fans.
The Mariners experienced further success in 1997 with a second division title, but the franchise faced significant challenges after losing key stars like Griffey, Johnson, and Alex Rodriguez. However, the signing of Ichiro Suzuki revitalized the team, leading to a historic 2001 season where they set an American League record with 116 wins, tying the Major League record for the most wins in a single season, originally set by the 1906 Chicago Cubs.
Stadium
T-Mobile Park is more than just a ballpark; it is an integral part of the Mariners’ identity. Located in the vibrant SoDo neighborhood, the stadium offers stunning views of the Seattle skyline and a fan-friendly atmosphere that enhances the game-day experience. The ballpark has become a second home for fans who passionately support the team.Honours
As of 2024, the Mariners have struggled to consistently finish above .500, with losing records in 30 out of their 48 seasons. Notably, they are the only active MLB team yet to appear in a World Series, currently holding the record for the longest drought in that regard among active franchises. Nonetheless, the Mariners continue to strive for success, showing resilience and determination as they aim to break through to the postseason again in the future. The hope is alive among fans that one day they will see their beloved team compete for a World Series title.Recent & Upcoming Matches
