The Rays began their journey as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, emerging after a lengthy pursuit for a baseball franchise in the Tampa Bay area. This dream became a reality when an ownership group led by Vince Naimoli received approval in March 1995. The early years were challenging, as the team consistently finished at the bottom of their division. However, a pivotal moment came in 2007 when Stuart Sternberg, who had recently acquired the team, rebranded it to simply the "Rays." The new name symbolizes both a manta ray and a ray of sunshine, a refreshing change that coincided with a transformative era for the franchise.

The 2008 season marked a historic turning point for the Rays. They achieved their first winning season, clinched the AL East title, and captured their inaugural American League pennant by defeating the Boston Red Sox in the ALCS. Though they fell short against the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series, the Rays established themselves as a formidable force in baseball. Their success continued into 2020 when they again won the AL pennant but were bested by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the championship series.
