Cameron Maybin is a professional baseball player from the United States of America. He used to play in Major League Baseball for teams like the Florida Marlins and San Diego Padres. He last played for New York Mets in 2021.
Player Profile and High School Career
Cameron Keith Maybin was born on April 4, 1987, in Asheville, North Carolina in the United States of America. He Bats right and throws right-handed as well.Maybin went to the T.C. Robertson High School where he led his team to the state title in his freshman year. Stellar performances ensured that Maybin was named the MVP for the tournament. That wasn’t the end of his trophy run as he would go on to win the Connie Mack World Series batting title as well as the World Series MVP award.
Maybin was also given the 2004 Baseball America Youth Player of the Year.
Later, Maybin decided to go in for the MLB Amateur Draft. He was considered the third-best hitting prospect in the country at the time of his draft.
Professional Career
It took Maybin 4 months to reach a decision with the Detroit Tigers and the situation had allegedly reached a point where the offer was withdrawn. However, Maybin eventually signed for the Tigers in September, after the end of the minor league season, with a signing bonus of $2.65 million.Maybin began his playing career with the West Michigan Whitecaps in the Class-A division. He took them to the Midwest League championships.
Picked for the All-Star Futures Game, Maybin was also awarded the Class-A Playoff Performer Award by MLB.com in November 2006.
In 2006, it was the advanced-A or High-A division in the Florida State League for Maybin, and playing with the Lakeland Flying Tigers, Maybin continued his progress through the ranks as he made his way to the Erie Seawolves by August in the same year.
Maybin continued in the Class-AA league with the Carolina Mudcats and was batting at .262 with 12 homers and 38 RBIs to his name when he got a call-up to the Detroit Tigers in August 2007. He had two strikeouts on his debut against the New York Yankees however by his second game, he got his first hit as well as his first home run off Roger Clemens.
Maybin had an eventful second game as he got hit by Clemens on his next at-bat before stealing his first base in the MLB – all against Roger Clemens.
In December 2007, Maybin was a part of the 5-man contingent that was traded out to the Florida Marlins in exchange for Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera.
Maybin had a spectacular start for the Marlins in 2008, hitting on 9 of his 11 at-bats. He ended the season with a .500 batting average from 32 at-bats with 4 stolen bases.
In the 2008 season, Maybin slowly made his way into the starting centerfielder’s role, a spot that he earned against the Washington Nationals. However the 2009 season was slower for Maybin and soon, after 26 games and a .202 batting average, Maybin was assigned to the AAA league for some more practice to play at the top level.
In 2015, he started jumping from one team to another. He was also part of the Los Angeles Angels that won the 2017 World Series Championships.
Other teams he’s played for include Atlanta Braves (2015), Detroit Tigers (2016), Houston Astros (2017), Miami Marlins (2018), Seattle Mariners (2018), New York Yankees (2019), Detroit Tigers (2020), Chicago Cubs (2020), and the New York Mets (2021).
In January 2022, he announced his retirement from baseball. In the 2022 season, he started working as a color commentator for YES Network.
