Max Scherzer is a professional baseball player in Major League Baseball. He is an American citizen and as of the 2021 season, he plays for the Washington Nationals. He is considered one of the best pitchers in the sport and is nicknamed ‘Mad Max’. He is a right-handed pitcher and bats with his right as well. He has won the Cy Young Award three times and he has been named MLB All-Star seven times. Teams that Scherzer includes the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Detroit Tigers. He is signed on to a seven-year contract with the Nationals, through to 2021.
Born Maxwell M. Scherzer on July 27, 1984, Scherzer grew up as a fan of the Saint Louis Cardinals. He went to Parkway Central High School where he played basketball, football, and basketball. He was picked by the Cardinals during the 2003 Major League Draft but he instead chose to attend college at the University of Missouri in Columbia. In college, his coaches helped Scherzer address some issues with his form and gameplay. In 2005, following all his hard work and subsequent improvements, he was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year.
In the 2006 MLB Draft, he was picked by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was their 11th overall pick during the first round. After negotiations, he signed a four-year contract with them. He played in the minor league for a couple of years and in April 2008, he made his debut in the MLB. In the 2009 season, he became a full-time starter for the team. In 2009, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers. In 2010, he was sent to play for the Toledo Mud Hens. He went back to play for the Tigers a short while later. By 2011, was made the third starter.
He received his first Cy Young Award in 2012. He received two additional ones in 2016 and 2017. It was also in 2012 that he was named the Big 23 Pitcher of the Year. For seven straight years, starting 2013 through to 2019, he was named a league All-Star. Changes were made to his contract with Tigers in 2014 and they agreed to amend his salary for the 2014 season.
At the start of the 2015 season, he had signed a contract with the Washington Nationals. He signed with them for seven years and was worth $210 Million plus a signing bonus of $50 Million. In 2019, he helped the Nationals win the World Series.
