Shohei Ohtani was born on July 5, 1994, in Ōshū, Japan. The Japanese player is 193 cm tall.

He has competed as both a starting pitcher and a designated hitter throughout his professional tenure. He stands 193cm tall and bats left-handed while throwing right-handed.

Born to athletic parents, he was the first pick in the 2012 Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) draft.

Career

Ohtani began his professional campaign in 2013 with Japan's Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters. During his five seasons in the NPB, he was a five-time All-Star and won the Pacific League MVP and the Japan Series title in 2016.

He signed with the Los Angeles Angels to begin his Major League Baseball (MLB) career in 2018, winning the American League (AL) Rookie of the Year award. In 2021, he completed his first full season as a two-way player, winning the AL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award unanimously.

He won his second unanimous AL MVP in 2023 after leading the league in home runs. Following that season, he signed a record-setting contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2024, while serving exclusively as a designated hitter, he became the first player in MLB history to achieve a 50-homer and 50-stolen base season, which resulted in his third unanimous MVP award. He also won the 2024 World Series with the Dodgers.

On the international stage, he led Japan to a championship at the 2023 World Baseball Classic, where he was named the tournament's MVP.
