He spent several years honing his skills in the minor leagues, playing for teams like the Clearwater Phillies, the Reading Phillies, and the Indianapolis Indians. His persistence paid off when he made his MLB debut with the Phillies in 2001, where he pitched until 2003, showing flashes of promise with a record of 15 wins against 18 losses. His career took a significant turn in November 2003, when he was traded to the Houston Astros in a deal involving notable closer Billy Wagner. Although his time with the Astros was marked by limited opportunities, Duckworth eventually signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in December 2005. Shortly after, he was traded to the Kansas City Royals, where he would spend a substantial part of his career. Despite struggles on the mound, including a record of 4-10 with a 5.37 ERA in his first two seasons, he continued to fight for a spot in the rotation.
In 2008, he was designated for assignment but swiftly accepted an assignment to AAA Omaha. Duckworth's tenacity shone through when he was recalled by the Royals later that season, making an impact with a solid performance in his return.
