He was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim during the June 2009 Amateur Draft. He was their 25th overall pick in the first round.

Trout was born Mike Nelson Trout on August 7, 1991 in Vineland, New Jersey. His mother is Debbie Trout. His father is Jeff Trout, who was a former professional baseball player who played for the University of Delaware and for the Minnesota Twins in the 1980s. Mike started playing baseball at a young age and he was a die-hard fan of the Philadelphia Phillies growing up.

Mike attended Millville Senior High School. While there, he played both baseball and basketball. This earned him 5 letters. Before graduating, he had committed to play for East Carolina University but this was before he was picked out of high school during the 2009 MLB Draft. Millville now awards Trout’s jersey number to team captains. A practice that started in 2012, in place of them retiring his jersey number.

He started his professional career in 2009 at 17 years old. He played with the Arizona Angels in the minor league. He ended that season playing for Cedar Rapids. In 2010 and at 19 years old, he received the Topps Minor League Player of the Year Award. This made him the youngest player ever to have been given that award.

He was promoted to the major league in July 2011. Trout replaced Peter Bourjos, who was injured at the time. In August, he was sent back to play for the Double-A Arkansas. He was called back to the Angels a few weeks later. He broke many records during his rookie season in 2012. He was also named AL Rookie of the Year.

He has consistently been named an All-Star from 2012 to 2019 and again in 2021. In 2018, he was rated by Sports Illustrated as the #1 Player in Baseball. He continues to play for the Angels as of the 2021 season. He strained his right calf in May 2021 and was later put on the injured list. He is expected to return to play by the end of July.
