Giambi was voted MVP in baseball and basketball and was an All-League quarterback in football. At university he focused on baseball and was drafted to the Oakland Athletics in 1992. He debuted in 1995. He performed well and hit 27 homeruns in 1998, 33 in 1999, and 43 in 2000 when he won the American League MVP Award. In 2001 he signed a $120 million deal with the New York Yankees to the chagrin of the Athletics fans.
