With the John Lester sweepstakes hopefully coming to an end this one has to guess where? The obvious answer would be to a team who is focused on winning. That would be the Yankees, Red Sox and Giants. The Red Sox with three titles in ten years and the Giants three in five the are his most obvious choices. There’s no doubt the Yankees will exceed the luxury tax of 183 million. They’ll even go the extra mile and offer him seven years. That does’t mean the Yankees will win or win soon. They are many moves away from a world title. The Giants lost their post season MVP Pablo Sandoval to the Sox. Hanley Ramierez also rejoined his original team by signing a four year deal. That leaves Theo Epstein and the Cubs. The Cubs are loaded with arms and positional players in their system. But they like the Yankees are many years away from being serious contenders. It boils down to loyalty and winning. That leaves the Red Sox. A six year dear at 125 million is a reality. Signing on the dotted line is the other reality. The hometown discount statement he made earlier in the season certainly has exceeded discount.
