San Francisco Giants will face Detroit Tigers in the World Series after thrashing reigning premiers St Louis Cardinals 9-0 in the deciding playoff in California on Monday.
The Giants had been down 3-1 in the best-of-seven series, but fought back to win the final three matches to book their spot in the World Series against American League winners Detroit who swept past New York Yankees.
“They played with more heart, more determination than any club I’ve ever seen,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
“They were relentless, they didn’t want to go home. They had a never-say die attitude. They wanted to win for each other rather than themselves.
“These guys just never quit, they kept believing and I couldn’t be prouder of a group of guys and what they accomplished here.”
San Francisco, who won the World Series two years ago, will host Detroit in the first game of the decider on Wednesday.
