Kevin Towers, Padres general manager revealed on Wednesday night that the Chicago Cubs were still in the running to acquire Jake Peavy. This news came after Chicago signed up free-agent pitcher Ryan Dempster, with a $52 million contract.
He further revealed that he had just spoken to Cubs GM Jim Hendry earlier in the day, and that they were still interested. Towers said, “They’re still a player. They might have to be creative with their finances to make it work.” This was a turnaround from earlier reports, wherein sources had indicated to MLB.com that the talks had ended as the club would be unable to afford both Dempster and Peavy.
The four year contract offered to Dempster was made official on Tuesday, and the 17-game winner returns to a rotation that includes Rich Harden, Ted Lilly and Carlos Zambrano. Towers, meanwhile is also on the lookout for a third or maybe fourth team into a potential deal for the player. Peavy will be making $11 million in 2009 and is owed another $63 million, over the remainder of his contract.
On Monday, Towers said, “They have got a few attractive pieces, but it would probably involve a third or a fourth club.”
